The search for an explanation of the Star of Bethlehem is almost as old as the story itself. To date there is no generally accepted answer. This paper briefly reviews the possible explanations and concludes that it was almost certainly a fictional story perhaps inspired by the appearance of Comet Halley in AD 66.
