In January 2013 Members and guests celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Bristol Astronomical Society (BAS) at an evening dinner at the Old Bristolians Sports Club. The dinner was hosted by Chairman Nigel Tasker. Guest of honour was Professor David Southwood the new BAS President.

The President, David Southwood, with members of BAS CommitteeDuring the evening, Maurice Brain, BAS’ longest serving member (who has seen 63 of it’s 70 years) recalled the formative years of the Society when, during early meetings, no one could ask a visiting speaker any questions unless referred through the Chair! He also recalled (with personal sadness over recent news) that Sir Patrick Moore opened the Society Observatory in 1972 and offered fond memories of the founding of the Federation of Astronomical Societies. In his inaugural address to the Society, Professor David Southwood then looked forward to the type of astronomy societies like BAS might undertake in the next 70 years. Finally a 70th Anniversary cake was duly produced and consumed.
