Programme of Meetings

Guest speaker talking to the BAS

A guest speaker giving a lecture to the members.

Our new  2019-2020 programme of talks starts on the 4th of October 2019, with Prof. Mark Birkenshaw presenting our annual Rodney Hillier memorial talk.

Our regular meeting place is at Bristol Photographic Society, Unit 13, Montpelier Central, Station Road, Montpelier, BS6 5EE. See our Contact Us page for directions.

Meetings are held on Friday evenings and begin promptly at 7:15pm. Please arrive in plenty of time to enjoy tea and coffee beforehand.

We hold two types of meetings. On alternate Fridays we invite Guest Speakers to share their latest understanding of astronomical subjects. These can range from professional astronomers, key members of national amateur astronomy societies, media commentators or industrialists engaged in the business of astronomy.

On other Fridays we hold Club Nights which are are less formal evenings when members of the society give short talks or presentations on various astronomical subjects that interest them and (hopefully) other members! We even have the occasional play!

We regularly run observing sessions at our observatory on Saturday nights (weather permitting) and support solar observing and regular star party events. See our Observing section.

We welcome all visitors to our meetings, especially astronomers from other Clubs and Societies. We have had the occasional foreign astronomer visit us from places as far afield as Australia, South Africa and the USA.

We encourage local visitors to join the Society after they have visited us a couple of times. Your first visit is free and subsequent visits are £3. Becoming a member has benefits such as free entry to all of our friday talks, equipment loan, access to our members' Yahoo discussion group and use of our observatory.

Details of how to get to the Bristol Photographic Society venue can be found on the Contact Us page.
